Sophia Loren stars with Marcello Mastroianni in Ettore Scola's film, set in an apartment building on the day Hitler visited Rome. Loren is a housewife who stays home when the rest of her family attends the day-long rally, and Mastroianni is her neighbor, apparently the only other person in the building who hasn't gone to watch the parades.
Ettore Scola's classic excursion into everyday life during Italy's Fascist regime has been praised as wonder of humanism and compassion. The film was Oscar-nominated for Best Foreign Film as well as Best Actor and won a Golden Globe for Best Foreign Film.
