About the movie

Artist, pioneer, legend – words commonly used to describe the life and work of Agnès Vardar. 1955 marked the year of Vardas debut feature film that she produced and filmed. 64 years and more than 50 film projects later, Varda finally shares personal insights of her artistic life in her newest documentary. Using excerpts from her lifework, she shares her experiences from the analogue period of filmmaking to the digital landscape of today. Varda has continuously challenged institutional thinking and conventions by her unique visual storytelling techniques through her lifework, which Varda By Agnès portrays.
At age 90, Agnès Varda still manages to capture worldwide audiences and critics through her work. Her documentary Faces, Places (2017) was nominated for Best Documentary Feature at the 2018 Academy Awards. With its world premiere at the 2019 Berlin International Film Festival, Varda By Agnès sheds light on one of the most fascinating storytellers of all time.
“Two hours of magic” – The Guardian
“A personal, playful account of a rich creative legacy” – The Hollywood Reporter
“A charming and characteristically bittersweet farewell that allows Varda to have the final word on her films” – Indiewire
