About the movie

It’s 1969, and Lydia and Abbie are best friends at an English girls’ grammar school. After a mass psychogenic illness causes Lydia to faint, the school goes into a state of mass hysteria with all students hospitalized. When no cause of the epidemic is to be found, the school reopens and the mystery remains. Lydia, in her obsession with Abbie is getting more and more flirtatious with Abbie’s lover, who happens to also be Lydia’s brother. “The Falling” is a dark and dreamy coming-of-age mystery about friendship’s rivalry and the ambiguous sexuality of its heroines.
Acclaimed award winning documentary-maker Carol Morley has with “The Falling” directed her second scripted feature film. She has been placed in a new wave of British filmmakers including Steve McQueen (12 Years a Slave, Shame), and Peter Strickland (The Duke of Burgundy, Berberian Sound Studio), and “The Falling” has been compared to modern classics such as Sofia Coppola’s “The Virgin Suicides” and Peter Jackson’s “Heavenly Creatures”. Starring in the lead role is Maisie Williams, known mainly for her portrayal of Arya Stark in “Game of Thrones”.
“This is terrific film-making – enough to bring a rush of blood to the head” – The Guardian
“Atmospheric, insightful and darkly funny” – The Times
“All hail an uncanny British thriller” – This is London
