Drama, Women directing
Toni, 11-year-old tomboy trapped between two worlds: a world of boys and boxing to a world of girls and dancing. While she spends her days training at boxing in the Cincinnati community center with her older brother, she becomes fascinated by the dance team. As she struggles to fit in, a mysterious spasms, geared by some invisible hysterical contagion, begin to plague the dance team.
Anna Rose Holmer, in her feature debut, puts forth a striking and distinctive vision, as if this were a girl’s version of “The 400 Blows”. Her movie is a transfixing meditation on gender and self-discovery, distinguished by the dreamy beauty of its visual and movement-based storytelling. The blend of dance, coming-of-age, and psychological horror is what gives "The Fits" its unique shine. Screened at Venice Film Festival and Sundance Festival.
