Documentary, Women directing
Sicilian photographer Letizia Battaglia began a lifelong battle with the Mafia when she first pointed her camera at a brutally slain victim. She later spent her life capturing brutally realistic images of the Mafia’s effect on the Sicilian community. It is through Battaglia’s life’s work that Shooting the Mafia reveals the Mafia’s world of violence and power. The bravery and defiance of Battaglia, who endured multiple death threats and assaults, led to an exposure of the Mafia’s most brutal crimes and the dissolution of them.
In Shooting The Mafia, director Kim Longinotto dismantles the romanticised images of the Sicilian Mafia in the media, and depicts the stark reality of the Mafia from Battaglia’s pioneering point of view. Longinotto’s many award-winning films include Divorce Iranian Style (1998), The Day I Will Never Forget (2002), Sisters In Law (2005) and Dreamcatcher (2015). Shooting The Mafia premiered at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival and was praised for its gritty perspective of the Mafia and its portrayal of the power behind photography.
