This candid New York love story explores the chaotic 40-year marriage of renowned “boxing” painter Ushio Shinohara and his wife, Noriko. Anxious to shed her role as her overbearing husband's assistant, Noriko finds an identity of her own.
Cutie and the Boxer captures two lives united by a dedication to art-making for a touching meditation on the eternal themes of love and sacrifice. Director Zachary Heinzerling is joined by producer Lydia Dean Pilcher (The Darjeeling Limited, The Talented Mr. Ripley) and the film features soundtrack by avant-garde saxophonist Yasuaki Shimizu. Winner of Best U.S. Documentary Directing at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival and nominated for Best Documentary Feature at the 2014 Academy Awards.
