A European king seeks refuge in New York City following a revolution in his country. Left without money, he even stars in TV commercials to fund his living expenses. When he takes a ten-year old boy under his wing, homeless due to his parents being persecuted by the House Committee on Un-American Activities, the former king himself is summoned to a Committee hearing as well. Though the boy’s fate is now uncertain, the the ensuing turmoil is non the less a hilarious one.
This late Chaplin piece was his last in the lead role, and was made after his exile from the States. Presenting a satirical view of the American McCarthyism, “A King in New York” didn’t premiere in the USA until 26 years after its initial release. Nonetheless it was a success in Europe, including being nominated for the Silver Ribbon.
