About the movie

Sancaka is a youngster who lives frightened by most of things – when he was younger his father was killed in a labor strike and his mother disappeared from his life to go and work in the city. Separated from both his parents, he becomes a child of the streets in Jakarta. Sanacka’s origin story is grounded in the working-class realities where he must learn the hard truths that the best way to survive is to learn how to fight and mind one’s own business. He learns martial arts and his powers are soon awakened when he must choose between continuing to look out for himself or do something about the injustice that surrounds him.
Directed by one of Indonesia’s most prolific hitmakers Joko Anwar and premiering internationally at Toronto International Film Festival, Gundala is an adaptation of one of Indonesia’s most treasured comic books.
