The Satanic Temple is an American organization and religious group, whose popularity has expanded worldwide since its start in 2013. Hail Satan? chronicles the growth of the organization, led by Lucien Greaves, and its increasing influence in the world. To the members of the Satanic Temple, Satan does not represent evil, but instead rebellion and a freethinker who dared to question God’s authority. The proper way to worship, is therefore through political protests around the world.
Hail Satan? premiered at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival and was nominated for the Grand Jury Prize. It has been critically acclaimed for its portrayal of a grassroots organization who managed to expand its beliefs globally. This thought-provoking documentary is directed by Penny Lane (Nuts!, Our Nixon, The Pain of Others), who is known for being one of nonfiction cinema’s most fearless and unpredictable filmmaker.
