Searching for Sugar Man tells the incredible true story of Rodriguez, the greatest '70s rock icon who never was. Discovered in a Detroit bar by two celebrated producers, they recorded an album which they believed would be a huge success. However, the album bombed and rumours told that he committed suicide on-stage. But a bootleg recording found its way into South Africa and he became a phenomenon. The film follows two South African fans who set out to find out what happened to their hero. Their investigation leads them to a story more extraordinary than any of the existing myths about the artist known as Rodriguez.
Searching for Sugar Man is a story of hope, inspiration, and the resonating power of music. Opening film at the World Cinema Documentary Competition and winner of the Special Jury Prize and another 25 wins and 18 nominations during the year, topping it off by winning the Academy Award for best documentary film 2013.
