Elderly couple Shikichi and Tomi leave their small hometown to visit their adult children in Tokyo. Koichi is a doctor with his own clinic, and Shige has her own beauty parlor. Though they don’t see each other very often, the children seem moderately happy with the visit, always busy they don’t even find time to show their parents around the city. The only one who takes her time with the elders is Noriko, the wife of their deceased son.
Yasujirô Ozu is undoubtedly the biggest name in Gendaigeki cinema, the Japanese drama genre, and Tokyo Story is most likely his foremost work. In 2012, it was voted the best film of all time in a poll of film directors by Sight & Sound magazine.
