Documentary
Qatar won the right to host the World Cup in 2022 and ever since the construction of the several stadiums have been underway, being built by 1.6 million migrant workers from Africa, Asia and the Middle East. Worker’s Cup follow six workers and share their story, how they left their home to come and work for corporations who run the construction sites as well as their lives. By day they build the stadiums but by night they get to be the first ones to compete at the same arenas in their own soccer tournament; The Workers Cup.
Director Adam Sobel presents a documentary that combine the workers inspiring quest for glory in the soccer tournament with a look on how the reality and social issues are for the migrant workers in one of the richest country in the world. A well-balanced mix of joy and laughter on the soccer field and the shocking testimonies of men longing for their freedom from what they call modern-day slavery. The documentary was nominated in the ‘World Cinema – Documentary’ category at Sundance Film Festival 2017.
