Drama, Romance
Diagnosed as being on the autism spectrum when he was a little boy, Nathan (Asa Butterfield) has always struggled to relate to people. Even to his ever-loving and patient widowed mother, Julie (Sally Hawkins). Numbers are the only things that make sense to him. When Nathan’s attentive teacher, Mr. Humphreys (Rafe Spall), takes an interest in his talents and lands him a spot on the British squad at the International Mathematics Olympiad, the young math whiz finds himself travelling to a training camp in Taipei where he, along with a group of other socially awkward teens, discover that he might not be as weird as he had thought himself to be.
Inspired by director Morgan Matthews’s own BAFTA-nominated documentary, Beautiful Young Minds, X+Y is a touching, heroic and funny story of young people for whom the everyday life is a mountain to climb, and the only way they can overcome it is through the only language they truly speak — mathematics.
From the producers of Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom, X+Y stars Asa Butterfield (Hugo, The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas), Rafe Spall (Prometheus, Life of Pi), and Sally Hawkins (Blue Jasmine, Godzilla).
