The success of A Film about Siw keeps growing. Today, the film surpasses 57,000 cinema admissions, meaning it will reach 60,000 during its first month in theatres. A Film about Siw is the second most-watched Swedish premiere of the year. “We’ve had sold-out screenings, and it feels like everyone – truly everyone – has come to the cinema,” says the cinema manager in Landskrona.
Despite an intense premiere period, there are no signs of the success slowing down. Audiences continue to flock to cinemas across the country, and word of mouth remains exceptionally strong – not least in towns that usually struggle to attract audiences to Swedish films. It’s clear that the film has found a special place in the hearts of viewers.
“Reaching almost 60,000 admissions during the film’s first month is a dream scenario for a Swedish documentary. But what’s even more impressive is that we’re not seeing the usual slowdown after a month in theatres. On the contrary – interest keeps growing, and more and more people are finding their way to the cinemas to experience Siw’s remarkable story. It’s a wave of audience enthusiasm that shows no signs of stopping,” says Jakob Abrahamsson, CEO of the film’s distributor Nonstop Entertainment.
Many people who rarely go to the cinema have been drawn back to experience Siw’s life story together. “I haven’t been to the cinema since Grease,” said one visitor in Sandviken, who had now bought a ticket to A Film about Siw.
“We’re so happy that films like A Film about Siw are being made, because it proves that audiences want to come to the cinema – we just need to give them a Swedish film that truly matters! With A Film about Siw we’ve got a real crowd-pleaser, the kind of film that gets people out of their homes and talking about it to everyone they know,” says Susanna Holmkvist, Head of Marketing at Svenska Bio.
And in Siw’s hometown of Landskrona, the atmosphere at the local cinema has been exceptionally festive:
“We’ve played to sold-out screenings, and it feels like everyone – truly everyone – has come to the cinema to see our dear Siw on the big screen. Some more than once! The visit from Siw herself during the premiere weekend set off a celebration that hasn’t stopped since, becoming the talk of the town here in Landskrona. By far, A Film about Siw is our most-watched Swedish film of the year,” says Yasmine Jabert, manager of Biograf Maxim in Landskrona.

A Film about Siw is this autumn’s great feel-good hit – a unique look into Siw Malmkvist’s 88-year life and 70-year career. Through a newly discovered treasure trove of archival material, much of it filmed by Siw herself, audiences are taken on a journey from the humble housing projects of Landskrona to the grand apartment on Karlaplan, from the folk parks to Europe’s biggest stages. The result is a personal, surprising, and endlessly entertaining journey through both Swedish cultural history and Siw’s own colourful life.
When Siw takes the lead – anything can happen. And now, she’s got the entire Swedish cinema audience following along!
A Film about Siw is directed by Stina Gardell, with archival producer Frida Neema Järnbert. Benny Andersson and Ludvig Andersson of RMV Film are co-producers. Siw Malmkvist herself appears both in front of and behind the camera. Additional co-producers are Nordsvensk Filmunderhållning, Film Stockholm, Sveriges Television and Nonstop Winning Formula, with support from the Swedish Film Institute.
A Film about Siw continues to perform strongly in cinemas across Sweden and stands as one of this year’s major Swedish box office successes.
